The Good, the App, and the Ugly:

A lonely ranger armed with nothing but an app... Taking down a whole gang of ruffians and saving both his hometown and his laptop from trouble.

Chapter One: Trouble Doesn't Knock.

Well, I installed Prey on a laptop that I bought with much effort, I had read about the app and I thought it would come in handy to avoid losing my device. Usually, I take my laptop to work and I move around quite a lot, so it felt necessary.

A few days later my home was broken into and, among other things, they took my laptop. We reported this to the police but we never mentioned we had Prey on the device.

Chapter Two: The Long Game

I waited, and I waited for someone to open my laptop and connect to the internet. I had almost lost all hope when one day, after several months, I got a Missing Report from Prey. I was super excited!

It was nice to see the app running perfectly after months of inactivity, plus all the information it gave me about my laptop, like its location, some screenshots, and pictures of those using my laptop!

Chapter Three: Sweet ol' Justice

Got to say I played around for a few days, collecting information about the suspects and thinking about how I would take aaaaaaall that to the police. And I did!  They ended up catching a gang of thieves that had been causing trouble in my city, breaking into multiple houses.

It was quite a big event in my hometown, the police gave the news to the people and I recovered my device from which I write to you today.

Couldn't thank you enough! Thanks for letting me use this app, and for making me feel like I'm important as a user. You gave me a great story to tell around, and I tell it to my family, friends, and students all the time.

Once again, thanks.

  • Once received, time it took for police to recover it: One day.
  • Final thoughts: Thank you very much!

Full story below, as told by our User.

Three States and a Recovery Later:

My phone was stolen from my house, and once I realized I used Prey to locate it three states away from home.

I explained the situation to the Ohio police and they contacted Tennessee's department, within 4 hours of contact the local police came to me and said the Tenn department had possesion of my phone.

What's more, the Tenn police captured and transfered the suspect overnight to the Ohio Police Department!

If I had not installed Prey on my phone, I am absolutely sure I would have never recovered it, I'll subscribe due to the love given by a GREAT program.

Thanks again!

The Terminal, starring: a Laptop

I was traveling Europe when I got stopped for a random security screening at the gate of the airport in Brussels, Belgium.

I didn't have my laptop's charger with me as it was in my checked bag on the plane, so when the security agent asked me to turn on my laptop and prove it was a working, I couldn't.

Therefore, due to the new restrictions, my laptop was confiscated! Since I don't speak Dutch, I got little information on who had my laptop and how could I get it back.

And since I was forced to board the plane, I didn't know much more on how to recover it.

For the next month, it was a struggle to communicate with the foreign security companies, but Prey was a lifesaver and a huge piece of mind as I knew my laptop was secured. I could remotely lock my laptop with a password and see if anyone had turned it on.

Luckily I found someone who spoke English and he helped me locate the laptop and ship it to me. It was very impressive to turn on my computer, when it finally arrived home, and see that the tracking and locking features worked great!

Lost+Found: Case 3K2O - United States of America

by Diego Morales May 27, 2012

    • Location: A major US city.
    • Date Stolen: April 28, 2012
    • Date Recovered: April 29, 2012
    • Theft: From an unattended vehicle.
    • Missing items: MacBook
    • Police reaction: I filed a police report and waited. After I started getting Prey's reports, I called 911, cops didn't come, so I flagged an officer on the street who was surprised, and interested as I showed him the reports on my smartphone but didn't know what to do..
Since the reports pinged 2 locations, a few miles from each other which meant it was impossible as nothing can move that quickly, and one of the locations was clearly wrong.. the first report showed one
location, the 2nd showed another about 5 miles away, and the reports flip flopped back and forth. Police detective said, 'what am I supposed to do without an address, a general vicinity is not enough'
but with my insistence, we went to the precinct to speak to the detective. Later, using information from the user's actions, (and the IP address) they were able to determine which location it was. I was not given too many details though as to what or how they got it back.
    • Time it took for first report to arrive: 2.5 hours.
    • Once received, time it took for police to recover it: As soon as I walked into the precinct with the reports on my phone.
    • Final thoughts: Amazing. I felt it should work and it could, but then
as it happened it was really surreal to be watching what was happening in real time.

One of them didn't make it.
